Campaign Unavailable We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit American Lung Association Action Network. The short explanation of this alert was: Help fund research for lung health. Funding is needed for research to find a cure and improve treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), an umbrella term used to describe the obstruction of airways within the lungs that is associated mainly with emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Over 120,000 Americans died of COPD in 2002, making it the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. It has been estimated that 11.4 million Americans aged 18 years and older have physician-diagnosed COPD. However, close to 24 million Americans have evidence of impaired lung function, indicating that COPD is underdiagnosed.COPD costs the U.S. economy an estimated $20.9 billion a year in direct medical costs. Contact your Senators and Members of Congress today to urge them to support more funding for COPD research. *Feel free to add personal information - Convey experiences with COPD - whether coping on a personal level, or witnessing how a family member, patient, or friend has dealt with the disease. Explain how the disease limits physical activity, ability to work, social activities, and sleep patterns. If you would like to view details on this alert, please visit here. |
