The short explanation of this alert was:

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis is the 4th leading cause of death in the U.S. and is on the rise.  The American Lung Association is urging Congress to fund a program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to combat COPD.  We are asking you to urge your Members of Congress to make sure that funds are made available for this program, which will for the first time, begin to address this killer.

COPD claims the lives of more than 130,000 Americans each year. It is a term used to describe the obstruction of airflow associated primarily with emphysema and chronic bronchitis.  Sadly, COPD cannot be cured, but it can be treated.  Early diagnosis is the key to successful management of this chronic disease.  Early detection and the development of new therapies can improve health outcomes and help millions of people with COPD live longer, healthier lives.

The Lung Association is fighting for the establishment of this program because we know that unless a comprehensive, nationwide plan is created and better data collection occurs, COPD will claim even more lives.  Please join us today in asking your Members of Congress to support additional funding for a COPD program at CDC.

Please Contact Your Members of Congress Today!

*Please feel free to add personal information - Convey experiences with COPD - whether coping on a personal level, or witnessing how a family member, patient, or friend has dealt with the disease. Explain how the disease limits physical activity, ability to work, social activities, and sleep patterns.
