We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit American Lung Association Action Network.

The short explanation of this alert was:

Did you know that all federal worksites are not smokefree?  In facilities all around the country, federal workers are forced to breathe secondhand smoke while they are at work.  Even in states that have smokefree laws that protect all other workers.  That's why the American Lung Association is calling on President-Elect Obama to close those loopholes and protect all federal workers from secondhand smoke.

In 2006, the U.S. Surgeon General released a report revealing that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke and that secondhand smoke causes premature death and disease in those who are exposed to it.  Twenty-three states and the District of Columbia have passed comprehensive smokefree workplace laws, protecting the public and workers from the dangers of secondhand smoke.  But many federal workers – including those living in otherwise smokefree states – are still exposed to secondhand smoke every day at work.

Please join us in urging President-Elect Obama to sign an executive order closing the loopholes and making all federal buildings completely smokefree. Our goal is to obtain 10,000 signatures in support and share it with President-Elect Obama.  Please join the 7,327 who have already taken a stand for clean air by supporting Smokefree Federal Workplaces.
