We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit American Lung Association of California.

The short explanation of this alert was:

The ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach and Oakland account for almost half of the nation's seaborne cargo and this number is expected to triple by 2020.  These goods are transported from the ports primarily by diesel fueled trucks, ships and trains.  Diesel pollution has been declared a toxic air contaminant by the state and has been linked to asthma attacks, increased hospitalizations, heart attacks and strokes.

Over the next 15 years, pollution from the ports is expected to have a health impact equivalent to nearly $200 billion.

And worse yet, according to the California Air Resources Board, pollution from our ports cause 2,400 premature deaths every year with a disproportionate number of those impacted being low-income communities of color.

This is why we are calling on you to help us move an important piece of legislation out of the Assembly.

The Port Investment Bill will establish a fee on each container processed through the ports, with dollars raised going to programs designed to reduce port pollution.

Will you take a stand against diesel pollution and urge your Assembly Member to vote yes on the Port Investment Bill?

Take action today and help improve California's air tomorrow!
