Report Shows Maine Is Stepping Up Efforts to Protect Public Health

The American Lung Association of Maine is calling a victory for public health. Maine scored high for its comprehensive tobacco laws, which significantly reduce the life-threatening effects of tobacco products, according to the American Lung Association State of Tobacco Control 2004 report.  The report highlights the need for improvement particularly toward increasing Maine’s Cigarette Excise Tax.

The third annual American Lung Association report grades Maine in the following areas:

·         Tobacco Prevention and Control Spending,

Grade: A

·         Youth Access, Grade: A 

·         Smokefree Air, Grade: B

·         Cigarette Taxes, Grade: C
