The third annual American Lung Association State of Tobacco Control report has been released.  This national report card analyzes state tobacco control laws in four key areas—smoke-free air, tobacco program funding, cigarette excise taxes, and youth access to tobacco.  New Mexico scored grades of  "C" in cigarette excise tax, "F" in tobacco prevention and control spending, "F" in smoke-free air, and an "F" for youth access to tobacco.

New Mexico's tobacco control program needs your help. The most important legislative issue facing our state this year is the possibility of passing a statewide clean indoor air law to protect all citizens of New Mexico from the deadly effects of secondhand smoke.  At present, 42% of the people in our state benefit from the existence of local clean indoor air ordinances in their communities.  Families and people with lung health problems are not subjected to the harmful effects of secondhand smoke in these communities.  Shouldn't every New Mexican have the same right?  The time is now to pass a smoke-free law that will save lives and improve the quality of life in the Land of Enchantment.
