We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Alaska Lung Action.

The short explanation of this alert was:

At American Lung Association of Alaska, we’re grateful for you—our E-Champions. Your invaluable support and action throughout this year have helped achieve many critical victories and made the world a healthier place for our children.

Each year the national American Lung Association grades each state on key tobacco control policies including cessation, regulation of tobacco products, ratification of the tobacco treaty, cigarette taxes, smokefree air, tobacco prevention programs and youth access to tobacco products. Alaska received high marks for 2005...indeed our grades have improved each year since the report cards initiation...a true sign of progress.

We’re thrilled about these 2005 tobacco-free achievements:

The $1.00 increase in Alaska’s tobacco tax continues into it's second year...the combination of the state tax and new tobacco taxes in communities around the state shows in the number of cigarettes Alaskans are buying...Tobacco sales are way down!!!!

  • 11.5 million fewer packs of cigarettes were sold in FY 2005 than in FY 1997--- that’s 230 million fewer cigarettes sold since Alaska's first significant tobacco tax passed.

Measurable outcomes of Alaska's investment include:

  • From 1991 to 2002, the prevalence of prenatal smoking has decreased nearly 24%
  • 81% of all smokers would like to quit
  • 15% of adult Alaskans were exposed to secondhand smoke in their home in the last 30 days; 19% were exposed in the workplace.

We've seen a 50% reduction in high school smoking and for the first time in years, a decline in adult smoking.

  • For 2004 – the most recent year for which data is available, the estimated statewide adult smoking prevalence was 24%—the lowest it has been since it was first measured in 1991!!!

We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished together, and we hope that you are too! Thanks again for your support, and we look forward to another year of tobacco-free successes.
