The short explanation of this alert was:

Tell Mayor Williams to stand for public health and make DC Smokefree. Thanks to your support and advocacy efforts DC is close to becoming smokefree. On January 4th, In a historic vote, the DC Council passed legislation making the District of Columbia smokefree in all workplaces including bars and restaurants by January 2007.

Hundreds of communities and nine states have responded to the dangers of secondhand smoke by passing laws providing smokefree public places and workplaces. In these communities, the results have been effective in not only reducing exposure to secondhand smoke but in increasing the number of people who quit and discouraging kids from starting to smoke.

Please contact Mayor Anthony Williams and ask him to sign DC smokefree air legislation. DC residents should not have to risk their health in order to make a living.
