We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Georgia Alliance for Tobacco Prevention.

The short explanation of this alert was:

The annual American Lung Association State of Tobacco Control: 2005 report has been released.  This national report card analyzes state tobacco control laws in four key areas—smoke free air, tobacco program funding, cigarette excise taxes and youth access to tobacco.  Georgia, the first tobacco growing state to pass smoke free air legislation, scored a "B" in smoke free air. Georgia scored grades of  “F” in other categories.

Approximately 38,000 non-smoking Americans die from secondhand smoke each year.  Comprehensive workplace smoking laws have been effective in reducing exposure to secondhand smoke, increasing the number of people who quit, and discouraging kids from starting to smoke.

Please take a moment to send the attached letter to your state senator and representative thanking them for their support of the passage of the Georgia Smoke Free Air Act and for defeating tobacco industry efforts to eliminate local smoke free air laws. And, encourage them to make tobacco program funding, increased cigarette excise taxes and reducing youth access to tobacco a priority in future public policy.
