We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit The American Lung Association of Maine Advocacy Network.

The short explanation of this alert was:

The American Lung Association State of Tobacco Control: 2005 report has been released.  Maine is the first and only state in the Nation to receive four A's! This national report card analyzes state tobacco control laws in four key areas—smokefree air, tobacco program funding, cigarette excise tax levels and preventing youth access to tobacco. Maine has the best report card in the Nation!

We know these measures work to reduce smoking because there have been reductions in:

*  Adult per capita consumption (declined 28.4% between 1997 and 2004);

*  Adult smoking rates (now 21% from 27% in 1990); and

*  High school smoking rates (dropped 59% since 1997).

We are fortunate because Governor Baldacci and other lawmakers have wisely invested money from the Tobacco Settlement in the Fund for a Healthy Maine (FHM), which supports eight health improvement programs, including tobacco prevention and quit smoking programs. However, we need to stay the course with funding to maintain these levels of success.

Please take a moment to send the letter below to your Maine State SENATOR or REPRESENTATIVE in Augusta to thank them for their leadership in creating tobacco policies that protect all people in Maine from tobacco smoke and to continue their support of the Fund for a Healthy Maine Programs.
