We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit American Lung Association of Oregon's TakeAction Network.

The short explanation of this alert was:

The annual American Lung Association State of Tobacco Control: 2005 report has been released.  This national report card analyzes state tobacco control laws in four key areas—smokefree air, tobacco program funding, cigarette excise taxes and youth access to tobacco.  Oregon scored grades of  “C” in cigarette excise tax, "F" in tobacco prevention and control spending and a "B" in smokefree air.

Oregon’s tobacco control program needs your help. Our legislators have cut in half the voter-mandated funding for the hugely successful Tobacco Prevention and Control Program. With the enormous cost of tobacco use to our state, it is false economy to scrimp on measures we know prevent young people from picking up the habit.

Since the media is very likely to cover the release of the American Lung Association's State of Tobacco Control Report, this is an excellent opportunity to get letters to the editor printed.  Look for coverage in your local paper Tuesday or Wednesday.  Then, customize the attached sample letter and send it to the Oregonian as well as to your local paper.  When a paper gets a flood of letters on one topic, they usually print a representative sample.  Even if yours doesn't get printed, you have helped emphasize the importance of tobacco control.

Thank you for taking a few minutes to take action.
