The short explanation of this alert was:

Smokefree Indoor Air for a Healthy Virginia

The American Lung Association needs your help! Our local smoke-free air laws are weak. Between 35,000 and 65,000 non-smoking Americans die from secondhand smoke each year. No one in Virginia should have to breathe toxic fumes when visiting or working in a public establishment. Now is the time to pass a smoke-free law that will save lives.

The 4th annual American Lung Association State of Tobacco Control: 2005 report has just been released.  This national report card analyzes state tobacco control laws in four key areas—smoke-free air, tobacco program funding, cigarette excise taxes and youth access to tobacco.  Virginia scored grades of “F” in smoke-free air, "F" in tobacco prevention and control spending, and "F" for its cigarette excise.  Virginia earned a "D" grade in youth access to tobacco.  This year the American Lung Association calls on state and local policymakers to protect the public from secondhand smoke by passing comprehensive clean indoor air laws to ensure that the U.S. is smoke-free by 2010.

Please take a moment to send the attached letter to your Virginia legislators in support of legislation to protect all workers, nonsmokers and children from secondhand smoke in Virginia.

Sincerely,
American Lung Association of Virginia E-Advocacy Team
