We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit American Lung Association of Rhode Island.

The short explanation of this alert was:

Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of disease and death in the country and the state.  However, the Rhode Island state budget for Tobacco Control is too low to adequately fight the use of tobacco--barely a quarter of the minimum amount recommended by the US Centers for Disease Control.  This failure to make tobacco control a public health priority last year led to an "F" grade in the American Lung Association's State of Tobacco Control 2006 report.  Please change the short letter shown here to tell your own concerns, and thereby join the American Lung Association of Rhode Island in appealing to the Governor and the General Assembly leadership to restore funding taken from the Health Department's Tobacco Control Program in the 2007 budget and increase funding in the 2008 budget shortly to be introduced.
