2008 State of Tobacco Control Report Release

The annual American Lung Association State of Tobacco Control 2008 report has been released.  This national report card analyzes state tobacco control laws in four key areas—smokefree air, tobacco control program funding, cigarette  taxes and cessation coverage for those wanting to quit smoking.  New Hamshire scored grades of  a "C" in cigarette  tax, an "F" in tobacco prevention and control spending, a "D" in smokefree air and an "F" for cessation services for those wanting to quit smoking.

Despite these grades, New Hampshire has made positive strides in tobacco policy this past legislative session and we need to keep the momentum going.

Support Tobacco Treatment and Prevention Programs

  • Governor John Lynch (if you live in New Hampshire)
  • Your Representative (if you live in New Hampshire)
  • Your State Senator (if you live in New Hampshire)

New Hampshire's tobacco control efforts needs your help. It is critical that New Hampshire invest tobacco settlement dollars to prevent our children from becoming addicted to tobacco and help adult smokers kick the habit. This is a sound investment that will save lives and reduce our states health care costs.

The evidence that these programs work is clear: what New Hampshire needs is continued political will. Three reports were issued last year, all of which recognized the need for New Hampshire to fully fund a tobacco prevention and control program. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued Best Practices for Comprehensive Tobacco Control Programs, 2007, affirming that investments in tobacco prevention programs save lives and money. Also in 2007, the prestigious Institute of Medicine and the Presidents Cancer Panel both issued independent reports which concluded that tobacco prevention and cessation programs are effective and essential components of a national strategy to reduce tobacco use.

Please support all efforts to help smokers quit and keep kids from starting:

--Fund New Hampshire's tobacco prevention and treatment program
--Support policies that limit exposure to secondhand smoke; and
--Keep cigarette prices high to discourage demand
