The short explanation of this alert was:

Big Polluters! Lung health advocates decided that battling Big Polluters must be the first order of lung health business for President-Elect Obama.   Big Polluters edged Big Tobacco by only 629 votes. We know fighting both Big Polluters and Big Tobacco must be priorities in 2009.

Today, we are listening to  our advocates and ask all of you, regardless of your vote, to send a letter today to President-Elect Obama supporting strengthening the Clean Air Act.   For those who voted to fight Big Tobacco, don't despair - the American Lung Association will continue to fight against Big Tobacco and for all other lung health issues.

For more than four decades, the American Lung Association rallied our supporters and fought for cleaner air. But, today, our air is still far from healthy.

Air pollution is more dangerous than many people realize - partly because you can't even see the most dangerous, microscopic particles that do the most damage to your lungs - and your life. Ozone and particle pollution can kill.  Air pollution also triggers asthma attacks and sends people to the hospital.  Anyone with a lung disease like asthma is at risk, but so are children and teens, seniors or anyone with heart disease or diabetes.

So today, it's time to fight for healthy air. Some of the biggest sources of pollution are the nation's old, dirty coal-fired power plants.  President Elect Obama must  require the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency  clean up these old dirty plants- to stop spewing tons of deadly gases and particles into the air.

The landmark Clean Air Act has helped us cut emissions from smokestakes and tailpipes since 1970.  But it needs stronger tools to protect us from these smog and soot-producing power plants.  The Clean Air Act must be strengthened so everyone can breathe easier. Send a message to President-Elect Obama to clean up  old dirty power plants.
