Campaign Unavailable We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit American Lung Association of California. The short explanation of this alert was: Did you know that diesel trucks and buses are the number one source of deadly diesel particulates in California? Did you know they are also a major source of pollutants that contribute to California’s severe smog problem? Did you know that particulate matter can penetrate deep into your lungs causing or aggravating lung conditions and even pass through the lungs into the blood stream where it can contribute to cardiovascular conditions such as heart attacks and strokes and even causing premature death? And that ozone can damage the respiratory tract exacerbating asthma and aggravating lung disease? Together, diesel particulate matter and NOX from trucks and buses are taking a very serious toll on the health and well being of Californians, especially those groups that are most vulnerable: children and the elderly. In fact, an estimated 1,500 premature deaths and more than 38,000 asthma attacks are caused by diesel pollution related to trucks and buses each year – and these numbers are only expected to rise. Equally important, truck drivers are 1.5 to 2 times as likely as workers not exposed to diesel exhaust to develop lung cancer during their lives. Since most of us or our families live, work or play near a highway, major road or transportation hub, these pollutants impact each and every one of us. In fact, 50 percent of all Californians live near a highway. To protect the health of all Californians, we are asking you to tell the California Air Resources Board to adopt strong, effective and health protective On-Road Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Rule. Such a rule is essential to reduce emissions and meet state and federal health-based air quality standards, to benefit public health generally, but especially the health of truckers, to reduce global warming pollution and save lives. Take action today and ask the California Air Resources Board to vote for strong on road diesel regulations on December 11th!
