Campaign Unavailable We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit American Lung Association of California. The short explanation of this alert was: In December 2005, the United States Environmental Protection Agency released its proposal calling for new national air quality standards for particle air pollution. Unfortunately, this proposal falls far short of what is necessary to protect public health. The federal proposed level for the annual fine particle standard is much less stringent than California’s precedent-setting standard adopted in 2002 and does not protect vulnerable groups; the short term (“24-hour”) standard is equally weak. The American Lung Association and many medical societies and public health groups including the American Public Health Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Thoracic Society, and the American College of Cardiology, have repeatedly urged EPA to follow the science and set tough new standards. Additionally, over 100 leading air pollution researchers and physicians sent a letter to EPA also recommending the most protective levels. The health science clearly shows that the current federal limits on particle pollution are set too high, allowing air pollution that leads to the premature deaths of thousands of Americans each year. The EPA proposal will leave millions of Americans unprotected and will lead to thousands of premature deaths. Please sign this e-petition today. We want to show the EPA that the public expects them to do what the Clean Air Act requires – to protect public health with an adequate margin of safety. Number of signatures needed by March 8, 2006 = 150 Current number of signatures (real time) = 103
