Campaign Unavailable We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit American Lung Association of California. The short explanation of this alert was: Tobacco is a major health threat to California. And it is easy to see that easy access to a product will encourage use and a person addicted to tobacco will be more likely to purchase tobacco if it is readily available. That is why we are thankful for Mayor Gavin Newsom and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for their proposed ordinance to eliminate all tobacco sales at pharmacies. Isn't it a contradiction for a pharmacy - in the business of making us well - to sell a product that kills nearly 40,000 Californians a year? Today, nearly four million Californians are addicted to tobacco and millions more are exposed to harmful secondhand smoke - with hundreds of children starting to smoke every day. The California Department of Health Services estimates that smoking costs the California economy an estimated $16 billion a year in medical costs, loss productivity and worker absenteeism. With numbers like this, the state of California should be doing everything in its power to prevent teens from starting to smoke and helping more smokers quit. Please join us today and send a letter to the San Francisco County Board of Supervisors and Mayor Gavin Newsom, encouraging them to vote for the health of all Californians by passing this ordinance that would ban tobacco sales in pharmacies. Not only is this a huge step for San Francisco, this is a huge step for the health of all Californians. The vote takes place Tuesday, July 29th so please take action today!
