Particulates are tiny particles emitted from diesel engines, industrial sources, woodstoves and fireplaces, agricultural burning and construction operations that travel deep into the lung and cause illness and premature death. The State Air Resources Board has estimated that reducing particulate pollution could annually prevent 6,500 premature deaths, 32,000 cases of bronchitis in children, 340,000 asthma cases and thousands of hospitalizations and emergency room visits.
